Harrington & Cortelyou, Inc. was founded in 1928, but our firm’s origins trace back to John Alexander Low Waddell. Waddell launched his career as a consulting engineer in Kansas City in 1887 and quickly earned broad recognition as an expert in long span and movable bridges. Our co-founder, John Lyle Harrington, joined Waddell & Hedrick in 1895, and the firm evolved into Waddell & Harrington in 1907. The patent of the span drive lift bridge in 1909 resulted in Waddell & Harrington designing approximately two dozen vertical lift bridges. In 1914, Harrington became a principal in Harrington, Howard & Ash, then branched out with our other co-founder, longtime colleague Frank M. Cortelyou Sr., in 1928. Through the decades Harrington & Cortelyou continued to develop its movable bridge expertise, as well as design major highway, railway, roadway and pedestrian bridges.

On July 1, 2010, Harrington & Cortelyou became part of Burns & McDonnell, an engineering, architecture, construction, environmental and consulting solutions firm also based in Kansas City. The two companies will work in concert to combine Harrington & Cortelyou’s bridge expertise with the transportation design and consulting services offered by Burns & McDonnell.
